From Marking to Drilling: How Our Robotics Platform Continues to Evolve
10 February 2026
When we first rolled out Lionel, our floor marking robot, into exhibition halls and construction sites around the world, we were just getting started on a much bigger journey.
The Beginning Was Just That - A Beginning
Lionel automated what many considered mundane but necessary work: precisely marking floor layouts for exhibitions and commercial spaces. For our early adopters, this meant dramatically reducing the time spent on hands and knees with measuring tapes and chalk lines. What they might not have realized was that they weren't just adopting a robot; they were becoming part of a platform evolution.
Building on a Common Foundation
From day one, our approach has been different. Rather than creating specialized robots for different categories, we focused on building a robust platform that could tackle various challenges with the same underlying technology.
Our platform approach means the technology gets more robust with each deployment, the trust customers placed in Lionel continues to grow in value, and we maintain a consistent operational experience across our robots. The same navigation technology that helps Lionel find its way around a crowded exhibition hall now guides our drilling robot through complex construction environments with equal precision.
What separates ambition from achievement in robotics is the ability to function reliably in messy, unpredictable environments. Our robots adapt to the real world where things rarely go exactly as planned. The proof is in the performance: last year alone, Lionel tripled the total number of marks painted across exhibitions worldwide.
Looking Forward, Not Sideways
We're focused on extending proven capabilities to solve meaningful problems. Our partnership with DEWALT has allowed us to bring automation to downward drilling, a critical process particularly in data center construction where thousands of perfectly aligned holes are required.
Thanks to our modular platform, we delivered a fully autonomous downward drilling robot that's now actively being used in professional construction settings, helping advance automation in the construction industry.
The drilling robot isn't a departure from our vision; it's a continuation of it. The dirty, dangerous, and dull work doesn't stop at floor marking. It exists throughout the building process, and our platform is increasingly ready to take it on.
Growing Together
The pioneers who first brought Lionel into their operations deserve our deepest gratitude. They've been essential partners in shaping what August Robotics has become. Their willingness to incorporate new technology and their invaluable feedback have fundamentally influenced our development path.
As we explore new opportunities across the construction industry, we remain equally committed to ensuring continued support and growth of our Exhibitions business. We've significantly expanded our team to support Lionel's continued development, ensuring our exhibition customers receive the attention they deserve. The growing demand for Lionel, as evidenced by last year's tripling of total marks painted, has only strengthened our commitment to this technology.
As our platform expands to address new challenges, we remain committed to the foundation that made it all possible: the trust placed in us by those early Lionel adopters who saw potential where others might have seen only risk.
We're transforming how essential work gets done, not by abandoning what works, but by building on it. The platform that reliably marks exhibition floors today will help automate increasingly complex workflows tomorrow. That's not just technological progress. It's progress with purpose.
